Babyproof cabinets without drilling: what sticks, what slides on, and the surfaces where tape fails

The order of operations

Do the free and reversible things first. Move the chemicals, the medicine and the knives to a high cabinet; Poison Control's 2024 data puts household cleaners at the top of exposures in children under six, and a cleaner that lives above the fridge needs no lock. Then walk the reachable doors and sort them: paired with hardware, single with hardware, no hardware, drawer. Each gets a different no-drill lock, and the sorting is the same one in cabinet locks for knobs, handles and no hardware.

Slide locks first

A slide lock loops over two adjacent knobs or handles and latches. There is nothing to stick, nothing to screw, nothing to cure, and nothing to remove but the lock. Jool's spans handles up to 5 inches apart and comes in packs of twelve. It is visible and, by two, learnable, so save the doors that matter most for the magnetic locks below; but for the pantry, the plates and the pots, it is the whole job.

What tape holds, and what it doesn't

Every other lock here is adhesive, and adhesive is a surface question. It holds on sealed, smooth finishes: factory-painted or lacquered wood, laminate, melamine, thermofoil, glass. It fails on raw or oiled wood, textured or heavily grained doors, waxed surfaces, chalk paint, and anything dusty or greasy, which inside a kitchen cabinet is everything. Clean with isopropyl alcohol, let it flash off, press hard for thirty seconds, and if the surface is one of the failing kinds, go back to slide locks or accept that this cabinet is where the towels live. Safety 1st says on its own page that particle-board interiors need screws for its magnetic set; on a rental, that means putting the magnetic lock on the solid-wood doors and using an exterior adhesive latch on the particle-board ones, where the tape lands on the finished face instead. The 24 hours

Baby Proof Me states it for both its magnetic kit and its straps: allow 24 hours for the adhesive to fully bond. Most makers do not state it and the tape is the same 3M acrylic foam. Install on a night the child is asleep, do not test with a yank in the morning, and treat the next day as the day the locks start working. The lock that failed on day one almost always failed because it was tested on day one.

Getting it off at move-out

Warm the lock with a hair dryer for a minute, work a length of dental floss or fishing line behind the pad to slice the foam, then rub the residue off with a citrus adhesive remover on a cloth, never a blade. On a sealed finish that leaves nothing. On a finish you were warned about above, it may lift paint, which is the argument for testing one lock inside a hidden cabinet the day you move in.
