How to read this list
Each product here won its own category ranking, where it was scored on a weighting tuned for that job: critical for stairs and windows, bulk for locks and covers. On this page they are all re-scored on the default weights (standards 25, install truth 20, resistance 20, usability 10, reversibility 10, value 15), which is why a gate that scores 7.9 on the stairs page scores 7.4 here. The score tells you how strong the product is against the rubric; it does not tell you which job matters more, because a stove knob cover scoring 6.7 is still the right buy if your knobs are on the front. What is missing, and why
No TV strap, because the CPSC's first recommendation is a wall bracket and the straps are covered with the anchor in best TV anti-tip straps. No tamper-resistant receptacle, because it is an electrical part rather than a babyproofing product, although it tops the outlet ranking in best outlet covers for babyproofing. No pool fence or alarm, because a pool is its own project with its own guide, how to childproof a pool. No kit, because kits leave out the two jobs with the injury data, per best babyproofing kits. And nothing here claims to have been tested by us; every score is from published standards statements, manuals and specs.
How we ranked these
Default weights across the board. The Regalo gate wins because it is certified, honest and cheap, which is the rubric in one product. The three products whose makers state a standard (Safety 1st's JPMA, Guardian Angel's F2090, Cardinal's JPMA) fill the top five with Roving Cove's published-density corners. The Hangman anchor loses reversibility points it was never going to get. The bottom two are the weakest categories on the site, not the weakest products: nobody in stove covers or strap locks states a standard.

Not the order on this page. Buy the anchor first (tip-overs have the body count), the stair gate second, the cabinet locks third, the outlet plates fourth, then the window guard, then corners and edges, then the kitchen straps and knob covers. That is the injury data in order, and it is the spine of the babyproofing checklist.
