What a fireplace gate does and doesn't do
A fireplace gate keeps a child away from the fire and the hot glass while the fireplace is in use, and off the hearth the rest of the time. It is a run of panels: a wall bracket on one side of the fireplace, panels hinged around the hearth at a standoff, a wall bracket on the other side, and a door somewhere in the run for you. It is hardware-mounted at both ends; a freestanding run of panels near a fire is not a gate. It does not pad the hearth edge (that is a cushion, in best hearth pads and edge guards), and it does not make a gas fireplace's glass front safe to touch; the CPSC says that glass can reach 500 to 1,000 degrees and burns in seconds, and the gate stays up until it is cool. The standoff
The gate has to stand far enough from the fire that a child pressed against it cannot reach heat, and far enough that the gate itself is not a combustible next to a flame. North States publishes a minimum 2-foot distance for the Superyard near a fireplace. KidCo publishes nothing for the HearthGate, so the honest minimum is your fireplace or stove manual's clearance-to-combustibles figure, and 2 feet as a floor. A wood stove wants more on every side. Measure the hearth, add the standoff on three sides, and that is the run of panels you need; a 6-foot hearth with a 2-foot standoff is a 10-foot front plus two 2-foot returns, which is why these gates are sold in six- and eight-panel sets.

Installing a hearth barrier
Find studs or solid trim on each side of the fireplace at bracket height; brick and stone around a fireplace take masonry anchors, covered in furniture anchors for drywall, plaster and brick. Assemble the panels flat, set the door where you will actually walk through, lock every hinge joint, and mount the end brackets. Then push on the middle of the run: it should flex a little and hold.
