Independence

Brands can't buy a place in our rankings, a better score, or a change to a review. We don't accept payment, free products or loaned gear for coverage. We earn a commission when you buy through some links (see the affiliate disclosure), and that commission is the same whichever product you choose, so it has no reason to change which one we rank first.

How picks are chosen

Every pick is chosen from the manufacturer's published specs and manual, the safety standard that applies to its category, and confirmation that the product is currently sold.

Sourcing rules

• Standards are named exactly. ASTM F1004 and 16 CFR 1239 for gates, ASTM F2057 for clothing storage units, ASTM F3096 for anchors, ASTM F3492 for cabinet locks, ASTM F2090 for window guards, ASTM F2208 for pool alarms, NEC 406.12 for tamper-resistant receptacles. “ASTM certified” as a vague badge does not appear on this site.
• Certification is stated, never inferred. A product is “JPMA certified” on our card only when the manufacturer's page says so. Otherwise the card says no standard is stated, and the score reflects it.
• Injury data comes with the year and the source in the sentence. Tip-over counts come from the CPSC's annual report; window-fall and drowning figures from the CPSC, CDC and AAP; each is linked in the page's Sources block with the access date.
• Install requirements come from the manual. When the box says “no tools” and the manual says “screw the wall cups in”, we quote the manual. That is what the “installation truth” line on every card is.
• Owner reports inform the write-up. “Owners frequently report the adhesive fails on textured cabinets” is a fair observation, attributed to the owners who reported it.
• A claim that can't be sourced is removed, not softened.

Scores and structured data

The score on every pick is an editorial judgment from published data on the six-metric rubric described on how we choose. It appears on the page as ordinary content, and it stays out of structured data, because a review rating in markup is a different thing from an editorial score.

Product selection

• Every product is currently sold and confirmed on the brand's site or a major retailer on the date shown.
• Every model name, identifier, price and claim on a card comes from a published source.
• Prices render only from live retailer data; with none, the button names the product and says “See today’s price” instead of a number.
• Every roundup includes a no-drill or rental option, because that constraint is in most of the searches.

AI assistance

Drafts on this site are prepared with the help of AI writing tools, working from the sources listed on each page. Every page is reviewed and published by Mike M., who is responsible for its accuracy. Nothing is published that a source on the page does not support.

Update cadence

• Roundups and comparisons: availability re-checked monthly; discontinued models retired within one cycle.
• Standards explainers: quarterly, and within 30 days of a CPSC or ASTM change.
• Room and stage guides: every six months.
• Every change is dated in the page's “What changed” log; the Updated date moves only with a real change.

Corrections

If a fact on this site is wrong, tell us at contact@gateandguard.com or through the contact form. We check it against the source, correct it within seven days, and note the correction on the page with the date. We do not quietly edit.

The safety boundary

This site describes products and the standards behind them. It is not a substitute for the manufacturer's manual, for your local building code, or for an adult in the room. Pages that touch water, windows, fire, stairs or tip-over carry a supervision note, and the note is the most important sentence on the page.
