Best hearth pads and edge guards: dense foam for the stone edge at forehead height

Density, not thickness

A cushion softens a fall by deforming under the head and spreading the impact over time. Thick soft foam bottoms out; dense foam does the work. Roving Cove says exactly that on its product page and publishes the figure: Shore A 20-N density against an industry standard it puts at 13, in a 0.4-inch-thick, 0.8-inch-deep L-profile. Nobody else in the ranking states a density, so we score the published number and treat the rest as unknown rather than worse. The other material question on a hearth is fire: Roving Cove states its foam passed US flammability tests without added flame-retardant chemicals; Prince Lionheart states its guards are fire retardant, non-toxic and latex-free. The surface is the install

Every product here is stuck on. Roving Cove ships 30 feet of 3M double-sided tape and leaves the edge roll untaped so you place the tape yourself, which is more work and a better bond on stone; its corners come pre-taped. Prince Lionheart and Safety 1st include tape; KidKusion uses adhesive-backed hook-and-loop so the cushion lifts off and re-attaches. Stone, brick and slate hearths are rough, porous and dusty, and the first winter of fires warms the adhesive every day. Clean with isopropyl alcohol, let it dry, press hard for a full minute per foot, and check the corners in January. On a glass-smooth marble hearth the tape holds easily and the foam shows; on rough fieldstone it holds with effort. No product here works on a surface that sheds dust.

Standards scores the published density and flammability statements; installation truth rewards Roving Cove's honesty about the untaped roll and Safety 1st's honesty that its adhesive is designed to remove easily (which is a renter feature and a hearth weakness); value is feet per dollar.
