How a magnetic lock works, and where it fails
A magnetic cabinet lock is a spring-loaded latch mounted inside the cabinet, on the frame or the box, with a striker plate on the inside of the door. Closed, the latch hooks the plate. A strong magnet held against the outside of the door pulls the latch back and the door opens. Nothing shows from outside, there is no button to learn, and a toddler without the key has no way in. The failure modes are all physical: the magnet has to reach through the door, so thick doors and metal doors defeat it; the latch is held by adhesive or screws on an interior surface that may be laminate, particle board or dusty; and the key has to be somewhere adults can find and toddlers cannot. Vmaisi says on its own page that any strong magnet opens its locks, which is true of all of them, so the fridge-magnet drawer is the one to think about.
The four numbers that matter
Key reach. Perma states 1 inch; Roving Cove 1.5 inches through solid wood with a 2670 Gauss magnet; Baby Proof Me 2 inches at 3,100 Gauss. Measure your door. Adhesive. Roving Cove names its tape (3M 4229P acrylic foam); Vmaisi and Baby Proof Me say 3M; Safety 1st says strong adhesive and, for its smaller kit, that particle board needs the included screws. Screws. Vmaisi, Roving Cove, Perma and Baby Proof Me include them. Use them on drawers. Cure time. Baby Proof Me states 24 hours before the adhesive fully bonds. Assume the same for every tape here and do not yank-test on day one.
How we ranked these
Bulk weighting (standards 20, install truth 15, resistance 25, usability 15, reversibility 5, value 20). Safety 1st wins the standards column outright with a stated JPMA certification and leads on the indicator, then pays for it in price per lock. Baby Proof Me and Roving Cove score on the honesty of their install data. Jambini trails because its manufacturer site was unreachable when we checked and its Amazon listing states nothing beyond the pack contents. The key problem
Twenty locks and two keys means the keys live in fixed spots: one high on the fridge side, one in a drawer the child cannot reach, and never on the counter. Baby Proof Me's three keys and Roving Cove's ring key (worn on a finger, so one hand unlocks and pulls) are the usability wins here. Safety 1st sells replacement keys separately, and so does Roving Cove; buy a spare with the set. When a key is lost, the manufacturers' own admission applies: a strong magnet from the hardware store opens the lock. Keep that magnet high too.
