Babyproofing gifts under $50: eight things under the maker's list price, ranked

The price rule

"Under $50" on this page means the price on the manufacturer's own site on the day we checked, which is the figure on each product's spec table with a link to where it came from. We do not quote Amazon prices, because Amazon changes them; the buttons open a search for the exact model and the price is whatever it shows. Products we could not find a maker list price for (the Mommy's Helper plate, the Skip Hop whale, the Dreambaby wind-ups) are left off this page even though they would likely qualify; they are on best babyproofing gifts for new parents without a price claim.

The under-$20 tier

Six of the eight are under $20 at list, which is where a babyproofing gift belongs: the corners ($10), the pinch guards ($9.99), the anchor kit ($14.99), the strap locks ($9.99), the power-strip box ($19.99) and the stove knob covers ($9.99). The anchor is the one to give if you give one; the CPSC counted 217 tip-over deaths from 2013 to mid-2023, and an anchor is the cheapest product on this site that addresses a death count. The gift weighting (standards 20, install 15, resistance 15, usability 20, reversibility 10, value 20) applied to every product on the site with a maker list price under $50, minus the ones that fail the gift rule from the main gifts page (sized to a window or a stairwell, or likely to offend). The corners win on usability and value with a published spec behind them; the pinch guards and edge guard tie next; the anchor loses points on reversibility because it leaves a hole; the straps, box and knob covers state no standard and rank on value and usability; the kit is last because inserts and adhesive score low on standards and resistance. The method is how we choose.

Pairings

Who should skip all of these
