Baby gates for stairs without drilling: what is actually possible, and the four screws worth asking for

Two things that are both true

First: the CPSC's gate rule, 16 CFR 1239, incorporates ASTM F1004, and the 2022 update put this warning on its own label: “You MUST install wall cups to keep the gate in place. Without wall cups, child can push out and escape.” Regalo prints “never use at top of stairs” on its pressure gates. A pushed-out gate at the top of a staircase is the injury every gate exists to prevent. Second: a hardware gate needs screws. There is no adhesive that holds a gate against a leaning toddler, and no reputable maker sells one. So “no drilling at the top of the stairs” is only possible when there is something other than the building to screw into. That something is a banister post.

The top of the stairs without drilling

If your landing has a newel post on each side, or a post and a section of railing, you are in luck. A banister adapter, clamps around the post carrying a wood board, gives a hardware gate a flat surface to screw into. The screws go into the board, which you own, not the post, which you don't. If one side of the landing is a plain wall, there is no honest no-drill answer at the top. The gate's hinge or latch bracket has to go into that wall. Which brings us to the four screws.

The bottom of the stairs without drilling

The bottom is the relaxed case: a gate there stops a crawler climbing up, and a pushed-out gate lands on the floor. A pressure gate between two walls, with its wall cups attached using removable adhesive strips instead of screws, is a reasonable no-drill install here, as long as you check its tension every week and re-set it when it drifts. If the bottom of the stairs has a post, use the adapter approach there too and the gate will not drift at all.

The four screws worth asking about

A hardware gate bracket is two small screws into a stud, per side. Patched and painted at move-out, they are invisible, and most leases treat that the same as a picture hook. Ask in writing, mention it is for a stair gate, and keep the reply. In our experience of reading a lot of leases, landlords say yes to this far more often than to anything else on the babyproofing list, because the alternative is a fall on their property.
