Best retractable baby gates: the one certified for stairs, and the two that are doorway gates

What a retractable gate is and is not

A retractable gate is a roll of PVC-coated mesh in a housing screwed to one side of the opening, with a catch mount on the other side. Pull the mesh across, hook it, lock it, and you have a 33-to-34-inch barrier with no bottom bar to trip on. Let go and it rolls back into a 3-inch cylinder. That is the whole appeal: no threshold, no swinging door, nothing in the way when the gate is not needed. It also means the barrier is fabric. A toddler can lean into it, and it will give a little before the rods and the lock hold. Retract-A-Gate rates its mesh for 200 pounds of push-out force in its marketing; the standard's push-out test is a fraction of that, and neither number means the mesh is a wall.

The other honest thing to say: a retractable gate only works when it is extended and locked. A rigid gate left open is obvious. A retractable gate left rolled up looks like no gate at all, and in a house where three adults pass through a doorway, someone will leave it rolled up.

Retractable gates and stairs

Most retractable gates are not certified for stairs, and the listings are quiet about it. Retract-A-Gate is the exception we can point to: its page states Baby Safety Alliance verification (the current name of the JPMA program), ASTM compliance, and use at the top and bottom of stairs, with bracket heights published (top bracket 30.5 inches off the floor, lower brackets 3 to 4 inches up). Perma states ASTM compliance and top-and- bottom-of-stairs use for its Easy Fit. Baby Proof Me states neither for its mesh gate, so we treat it as a doorway gate. How we ranked these

Default weights. Retract-A-Gate wins on standards (the only stated certification), on mesh height, and on the angled-install feature; it loses on price. Perma wins on value and width and loses on the lower mesh and the wall plugs in the box, which tell you these brackets often land on drywall. Baby Proof Me is cheap and unstated. The brackets are the install

A retractable gate puts all of its load into four small brackets, and the catch side takes a tug every time the gate is pulled across. Screw the housing side into a stud or a door frame. On the catch side, if you cannot hit wood, use a proper drywall anchor rated for pull-out, not the plastic plugs that come in the box. Baseboards are the other trap: the housing wants to sit flat against the wall from floor to top bracket, and a baseboard pushes the bottom out.
