02 Cabinet Locks & Kitchen Safety Best picks

Best oven and dishwasher locks: the two kitchen doors a toddler can open at chest height

An oven door drops to horizontal with a hot rack on it. A dishwasher door drops to horizontal with a detergent pod in the cup. Both are hinged at the bottom, which is why a toddler beats both of them.

Why these two doors and not the cupboards

Every other door in a kitchen is hinged at the side and sits above a toddler's shoulder. The oven and the dishwasher are hinged at the bottom, open towards the child, and finish as a horizontal platform at roughly chest height. That geometry is why these two beat a child who has given up on your drawers: they do not have to be pulled open against a hinge, they only have to be tipped, and then they hold a load.

The oven is the burn. A door that has just been shut on a 400-degree cavity stays hot enough to blister a palm long after the food comes out, and the rack that slides forward when the door drops is worse than the glass. The American Academy of Pediatrics puts kitchen contact burns in the same bracket as tap-water scalds for under-fives, and the mechanism is the same: a hot surface at the height of a child who has just learned to stand.

The dishwasher is the poisoning. A dropped door puts the detergent cup at eye level, and a liquid pod is roughly the colour and size of something edible. If your house runs on pods, locking the dishwasher is not optional - and the honest first step is to move the box of pods to a latched upper cabinet, which costs nothing. The full chemical sweep is on babyproofing the kitchen.

Measure before you buy

Appliance locks get returned more than almost anything else in this category, and nearly always for fit rather than failure. Three measurements decide it, and they take two minutes with a tape.

The gap. Hold a tape across the seam between the door and the appliance body. The EUDEMON states a maximum of 0.78 inches; plenty of older ranges and nearly every slide-in with a bullnose trim run wider than that, and no amount of pressing will make the arm bridge it.

The flat. Both oven locks here are adhesive, so they need a flat, sealed, non-textured panel on the door and a matching one on the body. A brushed-steel front is ideal. A curved front, a towel bar across the door, or a seam running exactly where the arm wants to sit will each defeat it.

The control panel. Check your own appliance before you buy. Most ranges built in the last decade have a control lock in the menu, and some wall ovens tie a door lock to it; dishwashers made since roughly 2015 very often have a control lock that stops the cycle buttons doing anything. A factory lock beats an aftermarket one every time, because there is nothing to peel off. On most ranges it does not lock the door, and that is the gap these products fill.

How we ranked these

Installation truth carries 30 percent on this page and toddler resistance 25, because the failure mode in this category is adhesive letting go rather than a mechanism being picked. Standards carries only 10: ASTM F3492 covers child safety locks and latches for cabinet doors and drawers, not one of these five claims it, and scoring them hard on a standard none of them states would rank them by nothing at all. The rubric is on how we choose.

We also applied one per-page override, and it is worth being explicit about it: the Dreambaby Adapta-Latch has its install and resistance scores cut here, because a trim-to-fit adhesive strap is the wrong thing to run across a door that reaches 400 degrees. On the fridge and the dishwasher it earns its place, which is where it scores properly on best refrigerator locks for toddlers.

The two oven locks side by side

Figures as published by EUDEMON and Baby Proof Me on the product pages linked from each value.

Both are heat-resistant adhesive locks in the same price bracket, and the difference between them is disclosure. EUDEMON publishes a hold rating, a cure time and a maximum door gap; Baby Proof Me publishes a colour choice. When the whole product is a piece of tape and a plastic arm, the maker who tells you what the tape does is the one to buy.

The detergent pod problem

A lock on the dishwasher door is the second line, not the first. Poison Control's national data keeps household cleaning substances near the top of the under-six exposure list, and single-dose laundry and dishwasher pods are the specific product that changed those numbers, because they are soft, bright and dose-sized. The order of operations is: move the pods high, latch the cabinet they now live in, then lock the appliance door so the cup inside is out of reach too.

Do the appliance doors on the same afternoon as the cabinet run and you will not come back to it. The ranked cabinet locks are on best cabinet locks for babyproofing, the under-sink door specifically is on best under-sink cabinet locks, and the stove knobs a standing toddler can now reach are on best stove knob covers.

Installation truth
Two conditions decide whether this works on your oven, and the listing is blunt about both: the mounting surface has to be flat, and the gap between the door and the oven body has to be under 0.78 in. Measure before you order. The tape also wants 72 hours to reach full strength, so fit it on a Friday and leave it alone.

What it gets right

  • Publishes an adhesive hold figure, which almost none of these do
  • Double button is a genuine two-step for a toddler
  • Swivels flat when not in use
  • Comes off without marking the oven

What it doesn't

  • Single unit, not a pack
  • Flat surfaces only - curved or handled oven fronts are out
  • No red/green lock indicator

Skip it if…

…your oven front is curved or the door sits more than 0.78 in off the body; the listing says it will not fit.

Adhesive, and the strap is cut to length rather than ratcheted, so measure and trim once - there is no going back. Clean both faces and leave it overnight before the first pull: a fridge door is the heaviest thing in the kitchen that a toddler will hang off. The swivel is what stops the strap dangling in the way once it is open.

How many to buy

Two locks cover a normal kitchen: one on the oven, one on the dishwasher. If the washer and dryer are in the kitchen or a hallway a child reaches, add a third, because a front-loader door is the same bottom-hinged problem with a drum behind it. Do not buy a twelve-pack of appliance locks; the rest of the kitchen wants cabinet locks, which are a different product at a quarter of the price per door.

Making the adhesive last

Wipe both faces with isopropyl alcohol rather than a kitchen spray, because every multi-surface cleaner leaves a film adhesive cannot bond through. Fit the lock when the appliance is cold. Press for a full thirty seconds, then leave it alone: EUDEMON states 72 hours for full strength, and a lock that gets yanked on day one is a lock that comes off in week three.

Who should skip these

How we chose

How these picks were chosen

Every product currently sold for this job was read and compared, then scored against the exact problem this page is about: the manufacturer's published specs, the opening and fit charts, the safety standard it states, the install conditions in the manual, the warranty terms and the cited research. The sources are listed at the bottom of the page.

Scores come from that published data on a rubric you can read, a missing spec is scored neutral rather than guessed, and nobody pays for placement. The full rubric is on How We Choose.

FAQ

Questions people ask

Is there already a child lock on my oven?
Very possibly. Most ranges built in the last ten years have a control lock in the menu, usually a long press on a dedicated button, and some wall ovens tie a door lock to it. Check the manual before you buy anything: a factory lock cannot be peeled off, which makes it stronger than any adhesive arm. The gap it leaves is that on most ranges the door still opens, which is what these locks are for.
Do oven door locks melt or lose grip from the heat?
The bodies on both oven picks here are described as heat-resistant, and the tape sits on the outer skin of the door rather than near the cavity. The real risk is fitting one on a warm door: adhesive bonds to a cool, dry, clean surface and never properly to a warm one. Fit it before you cook, and leave it to cure for the time the maker states.
How do I babyproof a dishwasher?
Three things, in this order. Move the detergent out of the dishwasher's own cup and out of the cabinet under the sink, into a latched upper cupboard. Use the appliance's own control lock if it has one. Then put a dual-button or decoy-button latch across the door seam so the door cannot be tipped down into a platform. Load the knives point-down while you are at it.
Are dishwasher pods dangerous for toddlers?
They are one of the specific products that moved the needle on child poisoning exposures, because a single-dose pod is soft, bright and exactly dose-sized to a curious mouth. Treat the box the way you treat medicine: high, latched, and never left on the counter mid-cycle. Powder or gel in a child-resistant bottle is a lower-risk choice while there is a toddler in the house.
Will an adhesive appliance lock damage stainless steel?
Both oven picks state clean removal, and in practice a hairdryer on low plus slow peeling takes the tape off a sealed stainless or painted front without marking it. The finishes that do suffer are unsealed wood panels and some matte-black coatings, which can lift. If the appliance is rented or leased, test on the hinge side first.
