Three burns, three products

The turned knob. A front-mounted knob is at toddler height, and gas knobs release gas before they light. A knob cover is a clear cup that snaps around the knob's stem; the lid opens for adults and the knob cannot be turned with the lid closed. It does nothing on a range with rear controls, which a child cannot reach anyway. The opened oven. An oven door handle is a horizontal bar at exactly the height a cruising toddler pulls up on, and a preheated rack sits right behind it. An oven lock is an adhesive latch across the door and frame; it only works if it is re-locked after every use. The reached pot. A cooktop guard is a clear shield along the front edge that blocks a hand from the front burners and the pot handles above them. It is the most intrusive of the three for the cook, and the least often needed once you turn handles inward and use the back burners, which the AAP's childproofing guidance recommends anyway.

What your range decides

Before buying knob covers, look at your knobs: are they on the front panel or the back? Round or oval? Is there a bezel or trim ring close behind them? The covers here snap around a round stem with clearance on all sides; an oval knob or a knob flush to a bezel will not take them, and no amount of reading listings changes that. Before buying an oven lock, look at the door: a flat painted or glass front takes adhesive; a brushed-stainless door with a textured face often does not, and a gap between door and frame wider than the lock's reach defeats it. And check whether your oven has a factory control lock that also locks the door; many do, and it is free.
